  2. E-module 3: Resources, Inequality, and Sustainability
  3. Step 2 - Exploring, noticing and comparing (360 min)

Step 2 - Exploring, noticing and comparing (360 min)

Completion requirements
Exploring, noticing and comparing the socio-scientific issues (360 min).

Step 2 can be divided into 2 lessons of 180 minutes each.

Lesson 2

Lectures about intercultural competences by the teacher (30 min) using the presentations (Exploring, Noticing and comparing).

Group debate (15 min) about the presentations.

The teacher lecture on the world’s resources - Geology (30 min) using the same presentation 'Exploring, Noticing and Comparing'.

This is combined with the recorded lecture about geology in relation to sand extraction by lecturer, PhD student, Anja Rousing Lauridsen, UCL University College, Denmark.

Group debate about the lecture (15 minutes).

Each group presents 6 findings from their group work.

Study-time for post processing.

Task after Lesson 2

Students are to read the three articles below:

  • Article: Bendixen, M. et al. (2019). Time is running out for sand. (3,3 pages) Nature
  • Article: McKinnon, S. Definition of Intercultural competence. (1,6 pages)
  • Article: Strauffer, B. (2022). What are 21st century skills? (1,9 pages) Read from the beginning and only to Category 2: Literacy Skills (IMT).

Programme Lesson 3:

Explore information at Associate Professor, Mette Bendixen's website: https://www.mettebendixen.com/

Research further to obtain more knowledge.

How do you think we ought to relate to the world’s sand shortage, and the implications of sand extraction on nature, marine life, and peoples' livelihood?

What are the perspectives regarding resources, inequality and sustainability?

Task after lesson 3:

After the lecture the objective is for the students to search for and obtain information on the issue of sandextraction in order to expand the knowledge. Students decide the format of the source. However, the students are to watch, listen and/or read what corresponds to 18 pages of 2400 keystrokes.

The students can look for more information online or in Additional resources.
